\nMany bloggers in foreign countries choose to blog in English instead of their mother tongue.\u00a0 I am one of those bloggers. \u00a0Living in the French part of Canada, I really understand the importance of speaking English. \u00a0I always knew that I had to blog in this language if I wanted to reach as large an audience as possible. \u00a0It takes a long time to build a readership and you don\u2019t want to scare away new readers with too many mistakes.\u00a0 Here are a few tips on how to overcome the challenges of blogging in English when it\u2019s not your first language.<\/p>\n

1. <\/strong>Inform your readers that English is not your primary language<\/strong><\/p>\n

I am not talking about a huge disclaimer.\u00a0 You just have to write a small sentence about it in the \u201cAbout me\u201d section of your blog so your readers won\u2019t be surprised if you make the occasional mistake.\u00a0 It will be less frustrating for them if they know that your English is not perfect because you are learning the language rather than because you don\u2019t pay attention to your writing or don\u2019t care about your readers.<\/p>\n

2. <\/strong>Use Microsoft Word<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even though most blogging platforms have spell check, this is not enough for someone who doesn\u2019t write the language well.\u00a0 Use Microsoft Word to write your posts. \u00a0It corrects not only spelling mistakes, but grammar ones as well.\u00a0 You just have to import your text into your blog once you are done.<\/p>\n

3. <\/strong>Think in English<\/strong><\/p>\n

The worst thing that you can do is to write your post in your first language and translate it later. Keep your sentences short.\u00a0 Use words that you know and that you are comfortable with.<\/p>\n

4. <\/strong>Don\u2019t let frustration get in the way<\/strong><\/p>\n

Frustration will get the best of you at one point or another.\u00a0 It is inevitable. Most of us have some experience writing and feel pretty comfortable with it.\u00a0\u00a0 But when it comes to writing in a new language, everything changes.\u00a0 Every word is now a struggle and you feel like a 6-year-old trying to write like an adult.\u00a0 When you get frustrated, take a break.\u00a0 Pour yourself a hot cocoa and think about something else.<\/p>\n

5. <\/strong>Hire an editor <\/strong><\/p>\n

I am not talking about a professional who will cost you a fortune.\u00a0 Look on Craigslist for a student looking to make an extra buck.\u00a0 Be careful who you choose.\u00a0 You don\u2019t want someone who will make more mistakes that you do.\u00a0 I have been very lucky to find a student from McGill University who edits for a student journal.\u00a0 I email her my important posts \u2013 like an article for IFB.\u00a0 She corrects my mistakes and sends it back to me.<\/p>\n

Blogging is a lot of work and it\u2019s even more work when the blogger doesn\u2019t speak the language that they are writing in very well.\u00a0 When I get impatient I remind myself of this beautiful quote from the book Eat, Pray, Love<\/em>: \u201cYou must be very polite with yourself when you are learning something new<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t agree more.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
